With more than 1 in 6 pupils now identified as requiring SEN support and increasing significantly annually it is unbelievable that more SEN training is not provided as part of Teacher Training.
I don't much like mandating for a number of different reasons, chief among them is that it usually leads to a click through approach, such as the annual Display Screen Equipment or Manual Handling Training! It can also lead to a monopoly on the market, which leads to a lack of research, new thought and innovation.
I do however, believe in the power of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) and even more so where the learner wants to learn! We have all seen those teachers that bring classes to life, making children want to learn about a subject through passion, connection with students and enthusiasm rather than because they have to.
Imagine if you had a whole school of staff that had the space, time and resources to become more informed and more able to manage the challenges of a school with an array of different needs.
Obviously, I don't believe any school or staff member is not trying their hardest to support every child far from it! I have seen first hand, the long hours and hard work staff in schools put in, day in day out. I just think there is another way of getting there that might be more exciting and rich for everyone.
Face to Face training is amazing and there is no substitute for that interaction, however providing staff with the opportunity to choose to learn about a subject they didn't even know existed is difficult to do Face to Face, and it could lead them to a whole new level of enthusiasm for supporting that pupil who everyone else is struggling to connect with, and that may change both the pupil and the staff members lives for the better.
I think our Whole School Online Training Platform provides this opportunity, for just £195 you can give your whole school access to 11 CPD Accredited Courses for them to complete anytime.
Why not give this experiment a try, let all the staff know that you have purchased this platform, it is FOR them, it is optional but there is some great learning to be had and the potential to make school life a lot richer for both staff and children. See how many of them take the opportunity to learn about a new subject and the impact that can have on their practice.
